Studio Policies

Payment

Tuition holds your weekly time slot in my teaching schedule throughout the year. You are required to pay for your reserved time whether or not you attend the lesson. Tuition for private lessons is payable monthly due the first lesson of the month. Please check the tuition calendar posted in the studio each month. If it’s more convenient for you to pay tuition several months or a semester at a time, please let me know and I’ll prepare an invoice. Payment may be made by check; cash; or person-to-person payment via your bank, ClearXChange, or Zelle (send payment to kaila@kgviolin.com).

Arrival

Plan to arrive a couple minutes before your lesson. Please remove your shoes and leave them on the landing inside the front door. Allow enough time before your lesson to unpack your violin in the waiting room and wash your hands. Students who are late cannot be guaranteed a full lesson.

Student Cancellation

Your lesson time is reserved exclusively for you. Cancelled lessons will not be refunded for any reason. Each student will be allowed a maximum of three make-up lessons during the school year if schedules permit. Time for make-up lessons is extremely limited and make-ups for missed lessons cannot be guaranteed. After three make-up lessons, further cancelled lessons will be considered forfeit.

In order for make-up lessons to be available, students must notify me of cancellations as far in advance as possible — ideally 24 hours or more before the lesson. If you do not call at least one hour before your scheduled lesson, you forfeit your chance for a make-up. Scheduled make-up lessons will not be rescheduled for any reason.

Teacher Cancellation

Lessons that I cancel for any reason will be rescheduled or refunded.

Snow Days

Unless you hear otherwise, I will be available to teach on school-declared snow days. Often roads are cleared by late morning or early afternoon, but please use your judgement. It is your decision whether or not you feel it’s safe to travel. If you feel driving conditions are hazardous, please contact me. You have a couple options:

  • Schedule a make-up lesson.
  • Record a video of your practice session and share it with me via Youtube, Vimeo, or Dropbox. I’ll record a lesson video for you in response. This is also a great way to get feedback on your practice methods.

Summer Term Policies

Year-round study is imperative for student progress. Students are required to take a minimum of four lessons over the summer. Students who discontinue lessons during the summer cannot be guaranteed a lesson time in the fall. Payment for four summer lessons will be due with June tuition. Additional lessons (beyond the minimum four) are payable per lesson.

By June 1 you will receive a summer registration form. Lesson scheduling during the summer term is flexible, and lessons do not need to be on the same day and time each week. You'll be able to select the dates you’d like for lessons. Summer lessons may be rescheduled with 24 hours notice. If you miss your lesson or cancel with less than 24 hours notice, you forfeit your chance to reschedule and must pay for your reserved time.

Parental Involvement

For students under 10 years old, a parent or guardian is expected to attend every lesson and supervise daily practice. I welcome discussion about your child’s progress at the beginning of your child’s lesson or by phone.

Practice

In order to make progress and enjoy learning the violin, you must commit to daily listening and practice (5 days per week minimum). Please read your practice assignments every week and let me know if you have any questions.

Recitals

There will be at least one studio recital per year, and all students are highly encouraged to perform. A fee of no more than $35 will be collected before the recital to pay the accompanist for his/her time and to rent the recital space. Specifics will be provided closer to the recital date.

Required Materials

Please bring to each lesson your violin, shoulder pad, practice binder, studio handbook, and all assigned music. Music and other materials can be purchased locally at Stamell Stringed Instruments. Online resources include Johnson String Instrument, Shar Music, and Sheet Music Plus.
